ANNIE G. LEVY

09.14.10 | LMCC Uptown/Downtown Workshop & Performance Opportunity
Annie has been selected as one 5 "downtown" artists to participate in LMCC 2010 Uptown/Downtown Workshop and Performance Opportunity.

She will be workshopping a new piece exploring personal and nation mythology described as follows:

The country of Latvia had been an occupied country from the 12th Century until August 21st, 1991. Since its mythological and folkloric beliefs were shaped by its invaders, now there is a push to reconstruct this aspect of a cultural past in the interest of national identity. Recently, I learned that all sides of my family resided in Latvia before immigrating but no records have survived of their time there. I find myself drawn the potential mythology of my past intertwined with that of Latvia’s emerging future. Combining Latvian folk tales and personal reflection, this theatre piece will explore the notion of a collective past and the mythologies we construct for ourselves in its absence.

The piece will have two performances:

Wednesday, November 10 at 7:30pm
Chen Dance Center (Theater Space)
70 Mulberry Street, 2nd Floor, at corner of Bayard

and

Thursday, November 11 at 7:30pm

We will also be combining Shakespeare's sonnets with the life and mythology surrendering Amelia Bassano, the alleged "dark lady" and a candidate for authorship in the never ending quest to discover who really wrote the Bard's works, for a new, as of yet untitled "al fresco" piece. We will be inviting campers and staff with an interest in getting their theatrical hands dirty with a little Shakespearean text boot camp to work with the company creating and performing this piece, which will be set among the beautiful murals all around camp.

06.03.10 | SIX SEEDS: The Persephone Project
What happens when a Greek goddess goes to therapy?

Thousands of years before Patty Hearst, Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Lee Dugard were the subjects of primetime specials and made-for-TV movies; a beautiful girl named Persephone was abducted by a man who forcibly made her his wife.

SIX SEEDS: The Persephone Project is a new play conceived and directed by Annie G. Levy, that finds Persephone herself in group therapy, telling her own story in her own words for the first time. Is she the first case of Stockholm syndrome, innocent victim, or a Lolita who loves her new life as wife and Queen of the Underworld?

A new play reexamines the ancient Greek myth about a girl kidnapped by Hades, god of the Underworld, as a universal journey from girlhood to womanhood.
